This blog came from both a place of frustration and of procrastination. After reading the final editor’s letter from Rookie Mag’s Tavi Gevinson (read it here) I was overcome with an onslaught of emotions. Rookie, for many women my age, filled a special place in our hearts. Written and founded by one of our peers it was formative for many of us as we grew and were confronted with the world. When I read Tavi’s letter I saw in it the same issues and anxieties I have been battling with. After mulling over the news that Rookie would be folding I had a breakthrough of sorts on the power of words. Young people (especially women and nonbinary folks) don’t have much tangible power in the world, but what we can use to empower ourselves and others are our words.
I want to use this blog to explore different constructs of myself and my identity and key issues I see around me. Making this a public exploration and abstraction of myself was intentional as growth is a collaborative process and if something I’m doing can benefit others, then why wouldn’t I want to share it?
So, about me. My name is Anna Carnes and this is my blog. From Indianapolis, IN I currently reside in Decatur, GA where I am currently finishing up my Bachelor’s degree, majoring in Art History with a minor in Film Studies.
